Chapter eleven
Quiet Not So Quiet Time
Trust was a fragile thing.
Oliver was not sure if he trusted the witches. Or if he believed the Return-Back spell would reverse the curse all together. There was a possibility the spell could release him and he could return home. Or he could return to stone and remain confined in darkness.
Forever.
Not a prospect he was looking forward to.
So, no.
He did not trust the witches.
However, he did trust Ibis. Her sorrowful eyes tore at him while Selma advised of the consequences it could have. There was something more to the spell Selma could not make out. First, they needed to know where he came from. She requested more time to confirm before completing it.
Now, he waited in her loft, surrounded by her familiars, books and scent.
âSooty no,â he growled, flying after the vexing owl. He swooped up below her. âNo, we donât eat butterflies,â he warned.
âHoooot.â
âThatâs not nice,â he grumbled, flying back to the loft and setting her on her perch. He placed a sliced apple by her claw and bit into one, showing her how to eat the fruit. He was on his second serving and enjoying every piece. âTry,â he encouraged.
She spread her wings wide and opened her beak, bobbing up and down with a screech before kicking the slice down to the ground. He caught it mid-air and sliced his eyes at the miscreant.
âNo butterflies,â he repeated.
âHoooot.â
âIbis said no.â
A soft giggle from behind him caught his attention. His eyes roamed over Ibis and her curves. She was stunning in a long forest green dress. The long sleeves and bodice ruched together in different shades of green, down to her waist, enticing her figure even more. She held Rosie in her hands while she chomped away at something long and orange. A basket sat in her other hand. Softly, she placed Rosie in the blanket off to the corner.
âIs someone being difficult?â
He remained quiet, blinking once and then again before remembering she asked a question and then growled as Sooty pointed a wing at him.
âMe? Youâre the one eating butterflies.â
âHoooot.â
âNo, you cannot.â His eyes lit up, annoyed with his new winged friend, before he turned his gaze to Ibis, who was bent over with a hand over her mouth, face red.
âLittle one?â
âYou are too cute.â
Cute.
There was that word again. He straightened to stand full height, towering over her, his wings expanded, making him appear larger. His eyes glowed, stalking her slowly. Her breath came in slow pants. She cautiously stepped back.
Very smart move, but useless.
A flush crept up her chest, neck and onto her beautiful face.
Her back paused at the wall. A wall full of books. Books she favored and read the most, according to her friend Elizabeth. Books Elizabeth suggested he read to get with the times and pop-culture.
Whatever that meant.
âDo you still find me cute, little one? Knowing how small you are compared to me,â he placed his wings on the opposite side of her, enclosing her in, yet leaving enough space as to not scare her.
